The first time I heard the word 'concierge' I was standing in the lobby of a five-star hotel in Cuba, watching a man in a crisp white jacket solve someone's entire vacation with a phone call and a smile. Dinner reservations, sorted. A car to take 5 people across the island, arranged. A personalized birthday cake that appeared, somehow, in a hotel room two hours later. I remember thinking: that job doesn't exist for regular life, it's a movie billionaire thing that usually only happens in films where the main character is rich and elegantly dressed.
So it's a little funny that I ended up doing this for a living. Not the elegant hotel lobby part, the other part: the fixing, the follow-through, the "let me take that off your plate" part, for regular people who are just tired, in a very ordinary, very human way.
Before Near and Dear, I spent years as an Engineer and Project Manager on large business sites. I was the trained and competent person who had to create timelines, lead the right person to the right task, and bring sense out of chaos. That skill translates shockingly to "please make sure my mother's furnace guy actually shows up". What I do now is to provide relief and a path forward to families, homeowners and seniors navigating in an unfamiliar world.
Personal concierge services are much more practical than people imagine; here on the Saanich Peninsula and Greater Victoria, this can be helping with everyday tasks, home support, property oversight, errands, transitions and those projects that are easy to postpone like decluttering and storage dilemmas. A Project Manager can be a huge help during home renovations or repairs, from planning to the follow-through, with the details kept on track by someone other than the busy homeowner.
Who actually calls someone like me?
Not who you'd think. Not just the CEO. It's the busy professional who hasn't opened her mail in nine days. The couple whose second home has become a second job. The son in Calgary whose mom is doing wonderfully well in Victoria, except the errands, the tech that won't work, or the planning required to get to a morning doctor's appointment in Vancouver.
It's the person wanting to host 30 people for Thanksgiving and not be stuck in the kitchen until the pie is served, or the week after said dinner when they don't want to cook at all! How about a meal quietly prepped in their own home, with laundry already folded when they get home.
It's the retired couple who finally book a six-week vacation, then panic at the thought of who will watch their house, care for the pets and plants? Or honestly, who will take them to the airport and not just dump them at the curb, but stay with them until they're through security, helping with luggage and checking in.
All of these people need someone trustworthy, local, and genuinely capable of taking something off their plate; someone consistent, not a different person each day. Someone with whom a relationship can be counted upon. Like family living next door.
Mostly this will fall into three categories: home and property support, downsizing and transition support, or personal and lifestyle support.
